100% spirituality can be taught apart from religion, so is advocated by Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita, the foremost of all sacred texts existing on mother earth. There is nothing more pure more sacred than teachings of spirituality contained in Bhagavad Gita. Human beings reached state of enlightenment only when they followed teachings of spirituality contained in Bhagavad Gita in toto.
Spirituality is all about taking the inner journey towards the spirit, consciousness existing in our heart. It is indulging in spirituality human beings finally emancipated from cycle of birth and death forever becoming a pure soul atman at the end of cosmic journey. Spirituality is all about diving deep into the bottomless pit of jnana wisdom contained in Bhagavad Gita and also Upanishads (independent spiritual treatises).
To indulge in spirituality human beings have to master art of contemplation (chintan). There is no shortcut path to indulgence in spirituality.
On the other hand those indulging in religious practices (rituals) were far away from spirituality. Religion is always indulged by people pursuing worldly life, those who did not want to indulge in contemplation (chintan) ever. Religion never took human beings towards God Almighty. Just by praying to or worshipping god one never gained anything in life. A religious practitioner keeps rotating in endless cycles of birth and death again and again whereas a spiritual traveler released from cycle of birth and death gains a permanent seat in kingdom of God (Vaikuntha in Hinduism).
We must never forget we are primarily a spiritual traveler, a spirit that manifested human form to work out its karma, remove dross impurities within. All the time this spirit prompted from within to indulge in spirituality but dominated by a bloated ego, religious practitioners did not listen to dictates of soul atman coming from within. To indulge in spirituality successfully we have to demolish our ego in totality. At any given moment of life only one can dominate our ego or voice of Lord Krishna come from within.
Allegorically, metaphorically Lord Krishna is spirit, soul atman existing in our heart. To regain its lost original pure prime pristine primordial form soul atman from within (Lord Krishna) all the time prompts human beings to indulge in spirituality never religion (path of rituals). Indulging in spirituality is following dictates of Lord Krishna from within. If we truly love Lord Krishna, we must abide by his dictates coming from within all the time.
Ignorantly going to a temple and worshipping Lord Krishna does not mean anything as it is just a ritual indulged by religious practitioners.
